A serious emergency
A PE is a blood clot that has become caught in the lungs, usually deriving from a locus in the lower leg (deep vein thrombosis or DVT), perhaps from trauma there. The clots may be multiple and tiny with a predominant symptom of breathlessness, while a massive clot may lead to sudden death. In the lower limb the calf is often swollen.
