Avascular necrosis
Avascular tissue is dependent upon nourishment by tissue fluids other than the blood, for example the meniscus in the knee is nourished by the synovial fluid that surrounds it. A part of the body that becomes avascular as part of a disease process may result in tissue death, for example avascular necrosis of joint cartilage.
